Satnavs are small but extremely clever devices that fit onto the windscreen or dashboard of your car that have GPS (Global Positioning System), which enables them to receive information and then pinpoint on an electronic map, exactly where you are in the world. You tell the system your destination, and it calculates the quickest route between the two points.
The exactly details of the journey can vary according to the information you enter, for example avoiding motorways etc.
Some of the units have small radio receivers in them too which supplies updated traffic information which can be handy for avoiding tailbacks and jams. With others you can visit a website and work out the route before you leave. This is then sent to the SatNav unit so there’s no programming or messing about needed.
Bluetooth features on some devices means that phonecalls can also come through your SatNav unit, giving you hands-free mobile phone operation.
